The dot SE country-specific top-level extension was set up in 1986 and assigned to Sweden. During the first years after its establishment, the registration procedure was very restrictive, so a very limited number of domains were acquired. Individuals were allowed to obtain no more than one domain under .PP.SE (“pp” stands for “private person”). Local presence was necessary, i.e. only Swedish persons, businesses and organizations were able to acquire a dot SE domain. In 2003, however, the registration process was loosened notably and, accordingly, the number of dot SE domains has been rising each year.

At present, anybody can book a dot SE domain, which allows you to get in touch with the Swedish web community even if you do not have a local presence.
